Wow
By buddhist book
Quite an intriguing concept. This book is a Dhammapada translation that includes the commentary by Buddhaghosa and the Pali original text. That itself is quite nice to have in one place - what makes it really fascinating though is the fact that it features a bilingual edition, i.e. you can read the English and Pali in parallel. For anyone who studies Pali that becomes quite a powerful learning tool.
Now, a lot of modern Pali learning resources focus on the suttas (the Buddha's own discourses) which makes sense as most students of Pali are more interested in learning about the Buddha's sayings. Here, using the commentarial wrapper around the Dhammapada that's the verses of the Buddha, the reader/Pali student is also introduced to the vastly different commentarial style of Pali texts. This opens up doors to a treasure trove of Buddhist commentarial material that ordinarily is hard to access unless you are an advanced Pali scholar. Of all of the features of the book, this was particularly helpful in my opinion.
Just one caveat: This book is the first volume (!) of a whole series focused on a few verses at a time. So don't expect the full Dhammapada commentary in this first volume.
