Well Organized, History Lesson of the Region

I bought the first edition of this book over 8 years ago, and couldn't let it down. "A Brief History of the Caribbean," by Jan Rogozinski simply is one of the most well researched and organized books on Caribbean history ever published. As a Latin American Studies major in college, this book was very reliable and informative in many of studies, and it allowed me, by utilizing the many maps and charts found in the book, to understand the very nature of Caribbean politics, culture, and most importantly, history. Everything from Pre-Colombian civilization to Post-Independence woes are covered here, and the author has released an updated edition with information as recent as of January 1999. I strongly recommend that readers of this book also read "A Continent of Islands," by Mark Kurlansky to gain more knowledge of this beautiful but troubled region.

A Brief History of the Caribbean

Scholarly written and factually correct it reads like a textbook; the main flaw is the style in which it is written. The author digresses with each chapter into material already covered in one or more chapters previous. Thus it is possible to re-read an account of events-nearly verbatim-in two or three different chapters on different islands. This makes comprehension more difficult and resorts to unneeded redundency. Nevertheless, the book is enjoyable, if very slow reading.

This book serves ideally as a brief overview of Caribbean History. It does not delve deeply into any specific topic. As a history teacher in the Caribbean I would not hesitate to recommend it to persons who are interested in knowing a little about the history of the Caribbean. Due to its simple language, tables and illustrations, I would also recommend it to my students as an introduction to Caribbean History. This book covers a wide range of topics spanning more than 500 years compactly displayed in 324 pages.

For men, the most important adaptive problem to solve was that of finding a mate. Men who did not solve this problem are not our ancestors. For women, the most important adaptive problem to solve was that of successfully bearing and raising children. Women who did not solve this problem are not our ancestors. These small differences underlie all the differences described in the book, including sex differences in mate preferences, physiology, cognition, aggression, status striving, and emotional experience. It can also help explain the differential treatment of children by parents, the differential success of boys and girls in modern schools, and sex differences in style of communication.

Intelligently written, very funny, lots of great photos

I bought this book when it first came out twenty years ago. Mrs. Crosby gives a very good insight into the man to whom she was married for almost 20 years and, yet, you never get the impression she gives away more than Bing Crosby would have wanted her to. Their marriage is described as one in which both parties loved each other very much, and yet one that, like any other, had its ups and downs. Mrs. Crosby writes very well and with great humor often poking fun at herself. Its a very enjoyable book filled with wonderful photos.

Being a Bing Crosby fan of both music and film, I found this tome very enchanting. It draws the reader into a long gone era of beautiful music and film while profiling the lives of the Crosby family. Kathryn tells her readers about the real Bing, the brilliant and talented husband, father and family man. A true Crosby fan can see thru all the media garbage written about this wonderful performer and finally enjoy the family stories that truly represent this exceptional performer. He was truly an icon, and should be remembered as one. Thank you Kathryn for your brutal honesty and enchanting stories.

The Elusive Bing

Bing Crosby was the iconic crooner from my parents' generation. As a child, I fell in love with "White Christmas" and his deep yet soothing voice. But I highly doubt that he was an easy man to live with or that it was easy to get to know him, even being his wife. I purchased both this book and Katherine's sequel and will be reading the sequel after the holidays. It's an interesting read written in a unique style that is engaging, entertaining and informative. If you love Bing,his music or are a fan of the era, this book is a must-read.

You know this isn't an ordinary sex guidebook when "A Word of Caution" at the beginning includes, "Some of the positions were accomplished only after years of yogic practice... Please don't get stuck in a position you can't get out of." And indeed, a few of the splendidly illustrated positions demand a degree of strength and flexibility we may find only in our fantasies. Picture a man and women engaged in mutual oral sex, the man sitting back comfortably with legs extended, the woman in a backbend over him, her legs straddling his chest, her arms straddling his thighs, face tucked into his groin. How long could you hold that, if you could get into it in the first place? A few acrobatic positions aside, most of the positions are enticing and, shall we say, accessible.

Talented illustrator Kyle Spencer is the star of this show. Her illustrations reflect four distinctly different artistic styles: realistic drawings of modern lovers, line drawings reminiscent of ancient Asian and Indian erotic art, illustrations from Indian temple sculptures, and classic Japanese erotic art. Sensual, inviting, humorous and instructive -always fun!

I found this book to be very enjoyable, inviting wonderful conversations with my partner and opportunities to explore more intimately the joy of sex and pleasure while marrying the sense of the sacred in all of it. The illustrations are beautiful and warm; the text humorous, honest and real. I appreciated the diversity of the quotes and illustrations. . . they speak to the allowance of exploring the wide variety of sexual expression. I highly recommend this book.

simple, but fun and visual

I like this book because it has simple drawings with very little text. As well, I like the fact that it has images from around the world through time and cultures. I recommend this book especially for women wanting more easy sexual information. Definitely not a porn book for men- this is done soley for the purpose of positions with a healthy,loving view of sex. Not a lot of new positions for me/us but very fun to view with a partner! The positions are quite do-able if you are in relatively good shape and not a couch potato. This is one of my favorites because of its simplicity and great pictures.

Don't let the editoral review or other reviews fool you. This book is not worth your time. The illustrations attempt to represent real people part of the time, but not always. Much of the genitalia is exaggerated, wrinkled, and very displeasing to the eye. The pictures are actually a huge turn off. My partner and I flipped through this book and found that most of the positions they suggest aren't that creative and the few news ones are only meant for acrobats, I'm sorry but not everyone's bodies can bend in the ways this book wants you to. Additionally, this book isn't very long, only 134 pages and quite a few of those are illustrations depicting artwork in ancient temples and paintings that do not include descriptions. Don't waste your money here, spend your $... on something else!

About the Author
The author and editor of numerous books and articles in the areas of ethics and social and political philosophy, William H. Shaw obtained a Ph.D. in political philosophy from the London School of Economics and teaches philosophy at San Jose State University, where he served as chair of the department for eleven years. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Hong Kong, and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He has two other books with Cengage Learning, SOCIAL AND PERSONAL ETHICS and (with Vincent Barry) BUSINESS ETHICS.

Vincent Barry is Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Bakersfield College, having taught there for thirty-four years as well as being a highly successful philosophy textbook author.

Well, I happen to disagree with previous comment. Not only did I like the course, I also liked the book. It wasn't an easy reading, I got to tell you. Sometimes it took more than one reading and several minutes or reflecting to figure out what the authors were talking about. But in the end it all made sense. And as a bonus the book went into great detail on philosophy, psychology, political science, and economics which I found quite helpful, since as a business major I didn't have a chance to take courses in first three subjects mentioned. The best thing, however, was, that almost a year later in packed Helsinki bar, I was able for about 15 minutes to talk about greatest German and French philosophers - all about them I learned from this book.

4 stars= some good arguments to consider, and issues it provokes. Being a philisopher student, some of these arguments are strong.

Nuntius said: "Keynes, Hayek, and Friedman" were skipped in discussion. I know that Friedman was well included, in the case studies and in some chapters. Look at 4.3 for a real focus.

He also said that "Like ssaber, I was disappointed to find a three page "defense" of capitalism and a ten page attack of it in Chapter 4, "The Nature of Capitalism.""

I noticed a sentence stating that we can't dismiss a capitalist society because of the fact of where it brought us, where as the other systems didn't do so well. Therefore, I wouldn't really consider this a dismiss on capitalism.

For example, in page 158, they say "The debate over capitalism is a large and important one; the presentation that follows should be viewed as a stimulus to further discussion and not as the last word on th pros and cons of capitalism." Furthermore, "complete coverage of capitalism's features has filled many books" (154). This clearly states what the authors intend, as a mere stimulus. In fact, having a whole chapter seems to be sufficient to their intent.

Maybe they can expand the subject to add more back and forth criticisms, but we know that debate can be long. As long as they made that statement of it merely being a stimulus, I'm ok with it.

After all, capitalism is a very new concept with the foundation of the industrial revolution. Of course debate should ensue. But I guess they should end the chapter stating the "nonetheless, a capitalist framework has got us great heights."

Great, Well Researched and Practical Text Book

This was the required textbook for my Business Ethics class.

This textbook is great! Very informative with lots of depth/research into general ethics. It then applies these theories to business with examples.

It starts each chapter with a real-life recent case study story and has several case studies and real-life examples at the end of each chapter for further discussion.

Overall, an excellent book to learn from. All the real-life ethical issues will keep you interested and wanting to read more.
