In addition there is a series of liver dysfunctions including fulminant hepatic failure, Reye's syndrome and congenital defects of urea cycle enzymes that could lead to hepatic encephalopathy, coma and death. As a consequence of impaired liver function, the ability to detoxify ammonia by its incorporation into urea is diminshed, resulting in increased ammonia levels in blood and brain. Hyperammonemia is considered one of the main factors in the mediation of hepatic encephalopathy and the classical clinical treatments are directed towards reducing blood ammonia levels. A part of the book is therefore devoted to the study of certain aspects of ammonia metabolism such as the regulation of the urea cycle, the main mechanism of ammonia detoxification in mammals, which is located mainly in the liver. The metabolism of ammonia in other tissues, including brain, is also presented, as well as the effects of hyperammonemia on brain metabolism and function and on brain microtubules. The control of cerebral protein breakdown is reviewed. The classical and some recently proposed clinical treatments as well as nutritional considerations in the management of patients with liver failure are also discussed.

Ligotti's ( Grimscribe ) clever title suggests the marriage of "nocturne" and "mortuary," an appropriate preparation for this dark grouping of tales. In the foreword, the author explains that they fall in the category of "weird fiction," that is, extreme gothic horror, featuring macabre endings and unremitting doom. The studied extravagance in the narration of the some of the stories verges on stylistic overkill. Nevertheless, as gothic tales, a number of them are interesting. Three good tales are "The Medusa," which tells of a scholar obsessed with the Gorgon whom Perseus apparently did not kill; "Mrs. Rinaldi's Angel," a tale that lends new meaning to the term "bad dreams"; and the novella-length "The Tsalal," a gothic work of demonic prophecy that boasts a gruesome ending. These 27 stories describe shadowy worlds of blurred dimensions and ill-lit interiors; as with all such tales, the "when" and "where" are much less important than the atmosphere of gothic horror produced by Ligotti's baroque prose.

Ligotti has written another colorful collection of horror stories ( Grimscribe , Songs of a Dead Dreamer , both Carroll & Graf Pubs., 1991), which spring on the unsuspecting reader the combination of supernatural characters, natural props, and "weird" circumstances. Stories include "The Medusa," which recounts the horror of Lucian Dregler, a man obsessed with finding the Medusa, the hideous woman with serpents on her head whose look turns men to stone. "Conversations in a Dead Language" is told from the perspective of an insane candy giver on three subsequent Halloweens; suspense mounts with each year as the reader witnesses the narrator's physical and mental deterioration. The last section of the book, "Notebook of the Night," is filled with short, lurid vignettes--snapshots of horror that demonstrate Ligotti's command of language and rich imagination. Starkly colored images keep the reader gasping. Recommended for horror collections.

The most disturbing terror comes from within, springs unexpectedly from bland or half-formed memories of the past. This is the terror that Ligotti cultivates in the richly evocative tales of this book, which slowly inundate the reader with a dread that even at a story's climax remains formless and shrouded, though undeniably present. Ligotti's protagonists are introspective psychic adventurers, such as a boy being taken to an old healer lady or an academic in pursuit of a fiend in the form of the Medusa, and his demons and horrors are both universal and very personal. His writing style is atmospheric, so much so that it at times risks turgidness. In the main, it serves his subject matter well, although it means his stories may prove inaccessible for run-of-the-mill horror fans. For those willing to immerse themselves in Ligotti's world, however, the rewards are great. Mike Tribby

"A man awakens in the darkness..."

Thomas Ligotti is a truly unusual author. He has a fascination with "weird fiction," with the unknowable, the macabre. This is paired with a knack for eloquent word-poetry, intelligence and complexity, and a sense of the chillingly unusual. When I finish reading several Ligotti stories, I find that the world looks different. The colors aren't quite right any more, or the angles, or maybe people seem a little darker, a little stranger.

I have several books of Ligotti stories and Noctuary is my favorite. I have often wondered why, and the answer I eventually came to is that most of the stories in here are shorter than those in other books. The longest one is less than 40 pages, and many are only two or three pages long. As much as I love all of Ligotti's writing, he's at his best when he writes in short chunks. Otherwise I find his writing sometimes drags a little.

Ligotti's work is not for everyone. If you don't like the weird or the macabre, you won't enjoy his work. If you prefer your stories to be normal, with a beginning, middle and end, all wrapped up in a neat little ribbon, then this is not for you. If you prefer your world to be its same, comfortable self when you close your books - don't read a word of Ligotti. Ligotti's style is definitely not for everyone. He hands us phrases that no one but he would conceive of, that almost cannot help but elicit a shudder:

"We witness the scene and, with what remains of our mouths, we smile."

But for those of us who enjoy it, it is a dread and harrowing pleasure - one that I would not give up. My only regret is that Ligotti is not a more prolific author.

I bought this book and now I'm gutted ...

To realise that for only a few dollars more I could have bought 'The Nightmare Factory' instead which contains all the stories in this book + many more! I guess I will end up owning them both. Ligotti is one of the few creditable horror writers working today and I could never get tired of his stories. They just seem to get deeper and deeper with each subsequent reading. However - if you are looking for blood/gore type horror don't bother - this is a deeply subtle writer at work ..

A true artist

Thomas Ligotti is easily one of the least known masters of modern fiction. His work transcends genre and his prose is most often poetic, his imagery haunting and atmospheric. For fans of any type of literature, Thomas Ligotti is a rare gem and a great talent in the field, though sometimes a difficult read, his work is always rewarding.
This book preceeded his most recent work, "In a foreign town, in a foreign land" and his one of his best collections to date. Even the last section, which are simply bits and pieces from his notebooks, nothing coming close to a finished piece, far outshine many popular and exhalted writers working in the field today. Ligotti can create entire worlds, set mood and instill any emotion he desires, with a masters skill in less than a page, something many current bestselling authors fail to accomplish in hundreds of pages, or their entire body of work.
For those new to Thomas Ligotti, this book is a great place to start, for those familiar with some of his other works, look for "Alice's last adventure" in Prime Evil, "In a foreign town, In a foreign land" a very rare novella, and "Songs of a dead dreamer" the mass market paperback is a highly revised version of the original small press release and his first published collection of stories. Any fan of great literature no matter the genre will not be disappointed by this great artist's work.

Pyramid-shaped, snowcapped Mount Kailas rises more than 22,000 feet above sea level in the Himalayas of western Tibet. No climber has tainted its slopes, for Kailas has been sacred for over 1000 years. To followers of Bonpo, the pre-Buddhist animist religion of Tibet, it is the "soul" of the region; to Hindus, the throne of Shiva; to these, to Jains and to Buddhists, Kailas is the divine taken physical form. Kailas is also key to a question that once puzzled geographers: the sources of India's four great sacred rivers, the Indus, the Brahmaputra, the Sutlej and the Karnali (a tributary of the Ganges) are all found in this region. In 1987, the authors joined more than 5000 other pilgrims in circumambulating Kailas. Johnson's first-rate color photographs are placed to enhance Moran's clear and informative commentary, which concludes with a brief, wise discussion of the mountain's "secret" and what one finds there: "A mountain. A lake. So high."

As in all his books Zach gets immediately to the point showing great respect for the reader’s time and valuing the brief time he has to share his concepts. He starts with the basics of The Stock Market ‘Most people tend to think that the stock market is one singular thing, but that is not the case. In fact, there are many different stocks, stockholders, and stock markets connecting buyers and sellers. There are two particular stock markets, primary markets and secondary markets. Obviously one comes before the other, and they serve two different functions. Primary market: The primary market is the market in which the stock first comes into being. It is the direct entry of the stock onto the market by the company. These
stocks are also referred to as securities. For the most part, these are securities that are issued by smaller companies that are looking to expand. By selling their stocks, they are getting a lot of people on board, in addition to a lot of money which they can then use. Secondary market: The secondary market is the market in which investors trade these previously issued securities without the involvement of the issuing companies. It is this secondary market that people are talking about when they are discussing the stock market.’

After reading this book I am persuaded and motivated by it so I can try to go into stock market but I need to research first before I hop in the bandwagon of trading as per advice on this book.
