These intersecting lines of interest have made cognition and emotion one of the most active and rapidly developing areas within psychological science. Written in debate format, this book covers developing fields such as social cognition, as well as classic areas such as memory, learning, perception and categorization. She was the daughter of a Presbyterian missionary in China and the wife of the Episcopal priest Edgar L. Sanford. Her first book, "The Healing Light," is often considered a classic in its field. She compares the power of God to the power of electricity -- "the whole universe is full of it, but only the amount of it that flows through...will work." She was a key figure in the Charismatic Movement in the United States during the 1960s through to about 1980, mainly through her writing. Her books include an autobiography titled "Sealed Orders."

Agnes Sanford has inspired many healing ministries including those of Francis MacNutt, Ruth Carter Stapleton and Jim Glennon.
Her message is clear and scriptually sound. God can work through us if we only let Him. There are certain things we can learn which will help us to seek God's healing love and that is what Agnes Sanford describes in this stimulating book.

Kricher's The Balance of Nature--a must read

John Kricher has done a masterful job of tracing the long history of ideas about a "balance of nature" and presents well-crafted arguments that refute the concept. Nature is not now in balance nor has it ever been--nature is dynamic and constantly changing. The heart and soul of the book is his analysis of evolution as the major controlling factor in nature. Humans have had an inordinate impact on natural systems and Kricher makes a strong case that humanity's future depends on how we act towards the world's ecosystems. This is truly a marvelous book--a must read for anyone interested in ecology, evolution, or conservation--and that should be everyone.

Four Fifths a Great Book

If you believe in evolution, says biology professor John Kricher, you shouldn't believe in "the balance of nature." You know that species are constantly changing, so ecosystems must be also. Research since Darwin shows that shorter time scales also show no balance. Fifteen thousand years ago, the area where Kricher teaches had been scraped clean down to bedrock by advancing glaciers. Plants and animals moved away, but they didn't move as a group, as a single system. They moved at different rates, and not always in the same direction. When the glacier retreated, plants and animals came back, again at different rates.

For a long time, ecologists thought of ecosystems as tightly-knit communities, almost supra-organisms. Everything fit and worked together. It was what nature wanted and what, at least without human interference, it would go to. No ecologist, says Kricher, believes this anymore. Living things are always interdependent but never neatly balanced.

Any sort of disturbance will change the plants and animals in an area: more or less rain, higher or lower temperatures, storms, etc. And disturbances are inevitable. Gardeners know that one year there can be an infestation of a certain bug and the next year hardly any. Accidents of history can lead to substantially different ecosystems in similar areas right next to each other. The balance of nature is intuitively appealing. It has roots in Greek philosophy and Christian natural theology. It was taken over by early ecologists. But nowadays, no good ecologist believes it, any more than they believe in a 6,000 year old earth. Individual living things come and go depending on how conditions change. Every place is unique and constantly changing.

Kricher gives a rich history of plant and animal interactions and human attempts to understand them. The first 170 pages are marvelous. They show deep knowledge and long thinking. However, the book doesn't stop there. There are two more chapters, and they aren't nearly as strong. They also don't relate much to "balance of nature." There is some "we are losing species at a high rate" that readers have heard many times before, some economics that I thought was shallow and sometimes wrong, and a quick tour of modern environmentalism that, again, readers have heard many times before.

Those thirty-plus pages are a missed opportunity . Writing about environmentalists, he says nice things about Aldo Leopold's "land ethic"-but the heart of the land ethic is the idea that, "A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community." Isn't this a balance of nature view? Kricher has gone to great pains to show that it is not natural for biotic communities to have "integrity" or "stability." He would have done a great service if he had used the end of the book to bring his wisdom to bear on the fascinating question, "How much of Leopold-and environmentalism in general-survives the death of the "balance of nature?"

A Thorough Explanation of Nature, Ecology & Time!

In many ways, Kricher explains Nature has no balance. Thus, any change will have a consequence, and changes are occurring all the time. Kricher correctly pinpoints people's concern about the economy. Yet, with Nature, it is dismissed as having a "balance."

Significant chapters were: Chapter 4 is "Ecology B.C. ("Before Charles). Chapter 5 is "Ecology A.D. ("After Darwin). Chapter 8 "Ecology and Evolution Process." Wow, Darwin was a game changer for all scientific thought about biology and natural history of living organisms!

Kricher approaches ecological changes, over time, from several directions: astronomy, geologically, bio-diversity, evolution, how natural selection really works, climate, specie function (vs. purpose), biological vectors and specie relationships (keystone specie, top down vs bottom up, food chain, etc).

Meera Prabhu wakes up after a terrible accident with absolutely no memory of herself. She sees a stranger in the mirror and seems to be living with another stranger, Ashruth. Ashruth, a doctor by profession and a clown by appearance, claims that he is her fiancé. They were engaged to be married and would have been married already if not for the accident. He keeps on emphasizing on how much she loved him and yet, he keeps her apart from her family for her 'mental state'. Armed with what seems to be her personal diary, Meera tries to grasp her identity and her reality. But no matter how hard she tries, she just seems to be unable to connect. Will Meera break through the hurdles in front of her and be able to connect to her friends and family again? Most importantly, will she ever regain her identity again?
Meera Prabhu is a gem of a protagonist. I connected with her early on and could relate to her questions and really felt for her. Even though she did come across as shallow at times, it was easy to overlook that in her condition. She has been brought up in a protective cocoon of love yet in the end she emerges as this strong and intelligent individual. The character of Santosh is also dealt with some amount of details, mostly through Meera's diary. We get a feeling early on that Santosh is a good person who is easily likeable. However, I feel that Ashruth'c character could have done with some more development as would have Meera''s parents.
The plot of the book seems simple at the beginning, a girl who has lost her memory in an accident, slowly gluing together her life. But the author has some surprises for us along the way making it easy to get lost in the story. The author's narration style is simple and engaging.

Intriguing from the word go!

Just You, Me and a Secret, is a book that is intriguing from the word go. There are many ingredients that made me finish reading the book in a single sitting. It is a thriller, a romance and it is well written.

When the protagonist Meera wakes up in a hospital room with a memory wiped clean, she struggles to deal with the revelations that comes to her one after the other. Ashruth, the doctor to whom she is engaged tries to make her understand the circumstances of their relationship. She finds it difficult to believe that she had fallen in love with Ashruth as she cannot find anything that convinces that she could have fallen in love with the silly man. Even after her personal diary reveals the secrets one after the other, she is battling with her own inner voice, which screams that something is just not right.

Why does she feel attracted to her cousin Santhosh? Why does her own parents appear like strangers to her? Meera battles with her past to find the reasons that will allow her to be at peace with her present. At the end, a Secret that has in its power the ability to destroy many lives emerges.

Memories are what make a life worthwhile. When those moments vanish from one’s mind’s eye, everything appears vague and senseless. Meera’s battle to find herself, her identity, forms the crux of the novel.

Ganga Bharani, a debut author, has done ample justice to her work. She manages to hold the attention of the reader with a clear and crisp narrative. She also throws in surprises which makes the reader turn pages one after the other. A great achievement for a debut novelist.

Love – The universal emotion which binds humanity together. All of us have our own distinct way of showing our love. Some are delightfully expressive. There are times when love helps us to re-visit our past to forge a happy future. Just You Me and a Secret is one such story.

The plot – A protagonist who wakes up not knowing who she is ? A blank past haunts her with only Clara for company. Who is Clara ? Did she have a role in shaping Meera’s forgotten past. you will have to read the book to find out ?

My new found crush has literally swept me off my feat. No I am not talking about another damsel in distress. It’s these books with smaller,compact story lines. Just You Me and Secret is one such book with barely 120 pages. It’s a brisk read from start to finish. The best part is it keeps you guessing till the very end. A promising debut by a talented female writer.

I loved the pace of the story. There wasn’t the usual unnecessary detailing. Sometimes too much detail can hamper the flow. The only negative in an otherwise engaging plot were the rushed film like portions which could have been avoided.

A good first step into the world of publishing for the author. Hopefully the next one raises the bar even further.
