Key Elements to Heal the Scars Left by Racial Conflicts and Further our Society

What a great book!!!, as a college professor and as a book author, I recommend this book as a valuable, practical, and enlightening textbook for courses dealing with social studies in colleges and universities throughout the country, as well as for anyone who lived through some of the most difficult racial conflicts of the last fifty years. Dr. Imani Michelle Scott provides an in depth study of the benefits associated with the possibilities of truth and reconciliation among the African Americans (which apply as well to citizens of all races and ethnicities) and our government. At the same time provides effective solutions to heal local issues through the scope of a global social justice vision. Dr. Scott’s research and findings motivates and encourages each of us as citizens to take responsibility for breaking the cycle of oppression and act as champions in furthering our society. To accomplish this type of endeavor she suggests “start from within” by transcending for example “humiliation” into “humility”. She explains that in order to understand each race we need to learn what is important to them. The success of the power of truth and reconciliation commissions in this country is brought out by Dr. Scott in historic instances like the acts of violence in 1979 by the KKK in Greensboro, NC which produced a coordinated effort by the citizens to form an effective truth and reconciliation commission (2004-2006) that acknowledged the inadequate response of the criminal justice system. At the same time by examining historic events like the Rosewood Massacre, and the deadly “Bad Blood” Tuskegee experiment Dr. Scott brings out the curative actions of: Recognition, Reparation, and Restitution as initiatives to advance the healing of all victims of racial based atrocities. Representatives of all parties from the “oppressed” and the “oppressors” she explains, must work together with the presence of the following components: truth, apology, mutual acceptance, action, and forgiveness, these are elements, which are found from the very beginning in the declaration of independence of this great nation.

Is truth and reconciliation possible?

This is an important and timely piece exploring issues of racial justice. At a time where police shootings of African-Americans have understandably put the United States at the center of debates about human rights abuses at home, Dr. Scott and her co-authors contextualize these inequalities as an outgrowth of centuries of subjugation and they make an important call to action. Where other nations have engaged in Truth and Reconciliation the US has never had any similar broad national process. Indeed, the consequences of not adequately addressing the consequences of racial inequality and subjugation in the United States impedes efforts to make real the promise of freedom and equality for all. This book is ambitious and raises serious questions about not only the need for truth and reconciliation but the imperative to consider ways of implementing these processes. This book makes an important contribution, as it offers an important starting point for consider the challenges and opportunities of engaging directly with issues of racial justice in the United States and productively acknowledging and responding to the historical legacy of racialized crimes against humanity in the land of the free.

About the Author
Carol Ann Tomlinson s career as an educator includes 21 years as a public school teacher. She taught in high school, preschool, and middle school, and worked with heterogeneous classes as well as special classes for students identified as gifted and students with learning difficulties. Her public school career also included 12 years as a program administrator of special services for advanced and struggling learners. She was Virginia s Teacher of the Year in 1974. She is professor of educational leadership, foundations, and policy at the University of Virginia s Curry School of Education; a researcher for the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented; a codirector of the University of Virginia s Summer Institute on Academic Diversity; and president of the National Association for Gifted Children. Special interests throughout her career have included curriculum and instruction for advanced learners and struggling learners, effective instruction in heterogeneous settings, and bridging the fields of general education and gifted education. She is author of over 100 articles, book chapters, books, and other professional development materials, including How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms, The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners, Leadership for Differentiated Schools and Classrooms, the facilitator s guide for the video staff development sets called Differentiating Instruction, and At Work in the Differentiated Classroom, as well as a professional inquiry kit on differentiation. She works throughout the United States and abroad with teachers whose goal is to develop more responsive heterogeneous classrooms.

Marcia B. Imbeau is an associate professor at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where she teaches graduate courses in gifted education and elementary education. She is actively involved with university/public school partnerships and teaches in a local elementary school as a university liaison. Her professional experience includes serving as a field researcher for the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented, elementary teaching in the regular classroom, teaching in programs for the gifted, and coordinating university-based and Saturday programs for advanced learners.

Imbeau has been a board member for the National Association for Gifted Children and has served as a governor at-large for the Council for Exceptional Children The Association for the Gifted Division. She is a past president of Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education, a state organization that supports appropriate instructional services for all students.

Working with special education colleagues, she has coauthored "How to Use Differentiated Instruction With Students with Disabilities in the General Education Classroom" as a service publication for the Council for Exceptional Children. Her most recent publication may be found in Designing Services and Programs for High-Ability Learners.

Imbeau is a member of the ASCD s Differentiated Instruction Cadre, which provides support and training to schools interested in improving their efforts to meet the academically diverse learning needs of their students.

Cajete's book is a fine work, that incorporates traditional Native American practices into the modern world. I recommend it to all teachers and students and American history for within the pages are academic, creative, and wholestic ways to approach learning and living. The book clearly sparkles with Native American philosophy/religion (ecosophy)which thought provokiing and clearly stated. The text weaves the traditional symbols and Indigenous American social customs into the modern educational practices of the USA. Respectful, multifaceted and interesting read.

Why did the Founding Fathers fail to include blacks and Indians in their cherished proposition that “all men are created equal”? Unable to convince others—and themselves—that racial mixing was viable, white reformers began instead to claim that people of color could only thrive in separate republics: in Native states in the American West or in the West African colony of Liberia.

Herein lie the origins of “separate but equal.” Decades before Reconstruction, America’s liberal elite was unable to imagine how people of color could become citizens of the United States. Throughout the nineteenth century, Native Americans were pushed farther and farther westward, while four million slaves freed after the Civil War found themselves among a white population that had spent decades imagining that they would live somewhere else.

Essential reading for anyone disturbed by America’s ongoing failure to achieve true racial integration, Bind Us Apart shows conclusively that “separate but equal” represented far more than a southern backlash against emancipation—it was a founding principle of our nation.
