In 2008, the famed director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Green Hornet, You'll Like This Film Because You're In It) wrote to legendary cartoonist Julie Doucet (of My New York Diary fame) to propose that they make a film together. Little did Gondry and Doucet know that the process itself would be the film, and they'd soon be starring in a "reality" comic and film of their own devising. They settled on a process that involved inserting the "real" Julie into a landscape of her own drawings. After meeting and filming with Gondry in Brooklyn, Doucet returned to her native Montreal and created dozens of drawings for the scenery, while Gondry, in New York, worked on editing the footage itself. Over time, these two elements were combined, and the result is a magical, funny and touching 20-minute film. My New New York Diary contains all of Doucet's drawings for the film, as well as the DVD containing the film itself. Both the film and Doucet's graphic novella are being released only in this deluxe, hardcover volume from PictureBox, which does full justice to the richness and warmth of Doucet and Gondry's collaboration.

Epic collaboration

Julie Doucet is my favorite cartoonist, a created with her artwork and directed by Michel Gondry sounded like a dream. And it is. Now I get to finally watch this dream, and it's wonderful.

This book was not for me, it was a gift, but as soon as I found it in my mail box and open it I saw that it was in perfect conditions. I would like to thank the seller for that.

Maybe I'm not the best person to describe the awesomeness of that book because honestly I have not read it all, only a little bit, but my friend says the book is great and the DVD is even better so I guess that should be good enough

Enjoyable for what it is.

It is a bit of fluff but it is fun fluff. The story is reasonably well written. There is no deep message here but none was ever intended. It is a recreational read for when one wants a bit of romance and light sex to enjoy without operating major portions of the brain. In other words a short vacation from the mundane world.

Excellent resource on learning SpriteKit, much easier than the older methods for creating iOS games. It's easy to follow along with, the project created in the book covers all the basics and even get's you up to submitting your application to Apple which is really helpful. I don't really enjoy following along in a book and getting to the end just to see I'll need to pickup another book to continue onward, this book didn't do that and I highly recommend it.

Puts the rabbit in the hat for SpriteKit.

I've seen a few books on SpriteKit and I think this is probably the easiest to assimilate. The book is mostly built around a single game project that expands in completeness/complexity as the book progresses. The author takes you from a very simplistic app to one that has simple gameplay but covers all of the basic operation of SpriteKit to a complete app that includes sound, hardware interaction and particle emitters.

At first I did wonder if this concentration on a single game would be limiting, but it is not. The author takes the time to explain just about everything and the one game really is an ideal vehicle to understand what you need to build just about any game with SpriteKit. I particularly liked the section about adding shadows.

A great intro to Spritekit, clearly explained and with some very practical information about handling Audio.

Excellent MIT update

This book is an excellent self-study guide to basic structural engineering. Understanding the material between these two covers is sufficient to pass the Professional Engineering Exam on either Civil or Mechanical Engineering. Keeps an interesting subject interesting with excellent qualitative physical descriptions of the physics at play in addition to laying out quantitative analytical techniques. A needed update from those other MIT classics of 1950: Den Hartog's "Mechanics" and "Strength of Materials".

Great CE Intro

Great little book from MIT course which makes you think about a problem. This is the first CE course and it covers a lot of area in an MIT manner. Worth the read for anyone. I got this for grandson who wants to be a CE.

I am a little disappointed with this book

I am a little disappointed with this book, because I thought that it was a college textbook. I guess it still is a college textbook, but it is written as a helpful guide to the classroom textbook in helping a student understand the "engineering language" in a more layman's type of description.
This is most suitable to a student that doesn't know much about engineering. If you are mechanically inclined or have studied physics in high school then perhaps you may already understand most of this terminology.

A Delightful Collection!

Few writers are equally capable in multiple genres. Some of my favorite novelists are terrible short story writers, and vice-versa. I loved Ray Bradbury's short stories but never responded as strongly to his novels; and Sue Grafton's short stories should never have made it past the editor.

But Joanne Harris is one of those few who are masters of any form. She writes adult novels, young adult novels, and short stories -- all with humor, depth, and virtuosity.

The stories in this collection are delightfully eclectic. The narratives vary from first person to third person, present tense to past tense. They are centered in mundane reality and startling new worlds, with characters equally mundane and transcendental. Not only does each story vary from its predecessor, but even the stories themselves can take strange and wonderful twists.

What is clear through all these stories is Harris' love and concern for humanity, her recognition of all our diversities and perversities, too.

One simple story brought me to eruptions of laughter, startling my wife who was trying to sleep beside me as I read. It is a story of the day when a rain god resident in New York encounters a sunny girl whose impact on him has worldwide consequences.

And another story, written for her daughter (who was dissatisfied with the ending of the Phantom of the Opera), offers a contemporary take on the story that moved me to tears.

Only one story -- Cookie -- left me unsatisfied. I felt that Harris had a better sense of how she was ending the story than I did. But the fault may be mine. It in no way kept me from cherishing the entire collection.

All in all, this is a great read, and a book to keep for sharing and revisiting.

Harris is always a good read

Joanne Harris remains one of my favorite writers. She presents an interesting collection of short stories that are well developed and meaty. Most of the stories were enjoyable and well worth the investment of time. Some of them were so absolutely fascinating that I hope she will develop them more fully into a full blown book or two.

A nice production, tightly woven to the show and it explains some of the things that were left hanging.

I'm sure people visiting my home won't appreciate this as a coffee table book, but then again, they aren't exactly "local people" either.

From the television show League of Gentlemen, this is supposedly the scrap book made by the female character, Tubbs, who runs the Royston Vasey local shop for local people alongside her brother, Edward. For fans of the series, this was written by the four writers of the show and comprises newspaper clippings, pamphlets, photos, drawings and all sorts of things that you would see in someone's scrap book, regarding or supposedly created by various characters from Roysten Vasey. If you like the show you'll probably like this, but it isn't essential reading.
