Great supplement for exam prep

I used this book as a supplement for a course in Physical Optics, mainly to get practice in solving problems. I found the chapters on Polarization and Diffraction very useful. This book helped me get a better grade in this course. This book does not cover the topics like Jones and Coherence Matrix and Stokes vector. However these topics are covered well in the same author's Optics text. BTW, The Optics text is also very good. Solving problems in this book and then approaching the text gives a much better understanding of Optics. This book does not cover Poincare' sphere, which is also an important topic for which we cant find material anywhere except our Professor's lecture notes. Overall, this book is a must if you are taking any Optics course or the GRE physics text or if you just want to master the basics of Optics.

Clear concise outline of optics

This Schaum's outline is better than the expensive textbook by the same author on the same subject in many ways, and in my opinion stands alone as a guide on optics. It gets to the meat of optics via solving problems that range from simple to difficult, which is particularly attractive to engineers learning or reviewing this subject. To me, the only chapters that seemed a bit confusing were the first two on wave motion and on electromagnetic waves and photons. For that material you may need to consult another source. From that point onward, however, the outline couldn't be any better. The outline even has a chapter that introduces Fourier optics. This outline would make an excellent review or supplement for someone taking a course in Photonics that uses Saleh's "Fundamentals of Photonics". That textbook has virtually no solved problems in it whatsoever, and the first third of the book follows the material covered in this outline nicely.

Hecht is one of the premier instructors and authors on the subject of optics and his contribution to Schaum's is no exception! I used this book to teach myself the fundamental's of optics while working in an applied physics laboratory. Very clearly presented material

About the Author
As you may have noticed by now, Mark is a breed all his own. Some may call his style unconventional, and the rest would probably agree! Mark got his start as a business owner early in life. He was only 10 years old when he hit the streets with a bucket and some soap and began a weekly car wash service for his neighbors. That led to his first “real” job with a lawn maintenance company at age 14. Mark was a hard worker. One of Mark’s mottos is, “If it’s worth doing, then it is worth overdoing.” While this is not the balanced approach he takes with his clients now, it might explain his “achiever” mindset in everything he does. At 17 years old, he decided he was ready for some independence; he moved out and got his own apartment while finishing high school. He graduated high school Salutatorian. That is second out of his entire class. After high school, he did not slow down. Mark put himself through college while working as a self-employed tile contractor and purchased his first home when he was 21 years old. While on a tile job, Mark was scouted to become a model and worked in the US and Europe for about 8 years. He was on television, on magazine covers, and inside more catalogs than I can count. Seeing him on billboards was fun but odd. Following his time in Europe, he worked in sales and marketing with a new product development firm. Never one to let an opportunity pass him by, he left that lucrative position to earn his real estate license, become a loan officer, and travel with a real estate investment firm. When the real estate market crashed, Mark changed direction. He headed back to college to expand his accounting, bookkeeping, and tax preparation knowledge where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Accountancy. So what does Mark do for fun? Aside from loving the fact that he is married to his best friend and business partner, he has the cutest daughter ever and three amazing stepsons. Mark loves life. He loves traveling and photography but cannot go more than a day or two without surfing. Mark loves to play tennis, or golf, or volleyball, or soccer, or ping pong, or pretty much any sport. Heck, he has even managed to make movie watching a sport. While not a big fan of reading, he still manages to read 1-2 hours a day. He works hard and plays hard, is abundantly humble, curiously intelligent, and savagely good-looking. If you are starting a business get this book!

I've been confused about how to start a business for years. I was a little skeptical when I was told this book would help me. It's was amazing how easy this book makes it. Within 30 minutes of reading I knew what I need to do for the type of business I have created. It really takes the confusion out and form a very clear outline for people who no nothing about starting up a business, like me...a guitar player.

What Is Done In The Dark...

Wanda B. Campbell's Illusions dives into the life of a pastor and first lady who put up a facade of happiness for their congregation's benefit. Denise and Pastor Bryce Hightower have been married for three years. Life is great until Denise discovers that Bryce has an addiction that could ruin their marriage and his position as a pastor. Denise decides to keep the secret and go on with their "perfect" life. She tries to get comfort from her mother and best friend, only to see her mother is just as concerned with appearances as her husband. And her best friend is so jealous of her she cannot even fathom there is a problem.

As time goes on, Denise realizes that Bryce is not going to change and does not want to change. That is, until a seemingly nosey neighbor sent from God, comes into their life and guides Bryce to the destiny God has for him. Family secrets are revealed and the root of the problem is discovered. When someone from the congregation is struggling with the same thing and goes to them for help, they realize it can no longer be kept quiet. Will their marriage be saved? Will Bryce overcome his addiction?

Illusions will have you on the edge of your seat. You will not want to put this book down until you find out what happens. Campbell has no problem digging deep into some of the troubles of today's church leaders. Although fiction, the situation is REAL. I definitely recommend this book to others. I cannot wait to see what else Campbell has in store for us.

About the Author

Narbik Kocharians, CCIE No. 12410 (Routing and Switching, Security, SP), is a Triple CCIE with more than 32 years of experience in the IT industry. He has designed, implemented, and supported numerous enterprise networks. Narbik is the president of Micronics Training Inc. (www.micronicstraining.com), where he teaches CCIE R&S and SP boot camps.

 

Peter Palúch, CCIE No. 23527 (Routing and Switching), is an assistant professor, Cisco Networking Academy instructor, and instructor trainer at the Faculty of Management Science and Informatics, University of Zilina, Slovakia. Peter has cooperated in various educational activities in Slovakia and abroad, focusing on networking and Linux-based network server systems. He is also active at the Cisco Support Community, holding the Cisco Designated VIP award in LAN & WAN Routing and Switching areas since the award program inception in 2011. Upon invitation by Cisco in 2012, Peter joined two Job Task Analysis groups that assisted defining the upcoming CCIE R&S and CCNP R&S certification exam topics. Peter holds an M.Sc. degree in Applied Informatics and a doctoral degree in the area of VoIP quality degradation factors. Together with his students, Peter has started the project of implementing the EIGRP routing protocol into the Quagga open-source routing software suite, and has been driving the effort since its inception in 2013.

v4.0.1 OCG? - Not Quite

*** Note - the following paragraph was written after reading only the first 7 chapters of the book and may have been a little harsh ***

I have to agree with the first reviewer. I will not be terribly thorough in my review as I've only skimmed through the first 6-7 chapters and found some somewhat alarming similarities to this book and the v4.0 OCG. The CCIE v5 blueprint has removed items such as RITE and RMON altogether but they are copied and pasted from Wendell Odom's book as if they are still testable topics. It is disappointing to see this book's content rushed through like this with little regard for matching contents of this "Certification Guide" to the blueprint that Cisco has made so public. I will modify my review after reading the whole book if I found it had value on it's own merit rather than the words blindly taken from previous authors. There are even portion of the text that were taken from v4.0 that are now incorrect such as the IPv4 Header reference diagram at the end of Chapter 4. It was noted fine in v4.0, why the change? The one positive note is that most of the changes from the errata for the final edition of the v4.0 OCG have been incorporated from what I have found so far in the this text. Wanted to end on a somewhat positive note.

The first chapters still leave something to be desired in my opinion but the chapters covering new IOS 15 configuration and feature sets of the routing protocols that are on the blueprint are a great resource. There are some section where the authors make references as though a diagram is present that lead me to draw my own but that is a trifling matter; the content appears to be great for those sections. I will update again with another star or 2 if this is the level of content throughout the remainder of the book.

Having finished the first read-through of the text, I have amended my rating to reflect my overall thoughts on the book. I feel that the high cost of the book is not warranted as much of it was already written in previous versions of the book without rewording of any sort. The remaining chapters do have some great content and the new material was covered well in my non-expert opinion. I feel that a candidate will get as much reading the titles in the "Recommended Reading" section at the end of each chapter than buying this book, incurring extra cost. If this book were more reasonably priced in the price range of an addendum to the previous version then my rating would increase 1-2 more stars as the material is as great as when Wendell first penned it. My only frustration with the material itself was already stated, pointing to those sections that are no longer testable for either the Written or Lab portion of the test yet still included in this version of the text.

Now onto more reading and lab work. Good luck to all who read this as I'm sure persons interested in this text are the same ones who are also pursuing this certification.

Great book for CCIE R&S v5 students

I am still at the EIGRP chapter and I do not agree with other reviewers that state that this book is simply a rushed text edited from the v4 book.

The EIGRP chapter is completely different (not to mention updated to named-mode/wide-metrics) and if you compare the depth of the explanations you will notice that it is much different in goals. The old book focuses on a quick topic review, this book focuses on specific points the authors believe a CCIE candidate must master.

No CCIE candidate is expected to read a couple books and be ready to get his/her digits. This is a book well worthy a reading to complement other sources. You will see insights from the authors so well explained it will feel you are sitting a bootcamp in front of them.

I think it's been fantastic so far

I'm not sure where the negativity is coming from in the reviews on this book. I think it's been fantastic so far, I'm roughly 3 chapters in. The CCIE exam has changed, however the topics covered in this volume (STP, OSPF, ISIS, TCP/IP, RIP, etc) haven't changed in 10+ years for the most part. There is nothing that can be said in this book that hasn't been said in countless others, which we've probably all read. If that's the case, then skip it. However if I'm going to invest the time in reading 800 pages for an exam that I'm probably going to fail 5 times, I'm going to spend the $65 and get the most current version of the book. Plus, even reading the same material but worded and presented in a different way is proven to help retention. Volume 2 is where the "new" material is going to be, and by new I mean the CCIE v5 exam topics that haven't been published in an official study guide or foundation learning guide textbook. Personally, I think of this as a refresher and an introduction to Narbik's writing style in preparation for volume 2. I consider this a must-have for anybody getting serious about taking the CCIE v5 written their first time around.

SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON Is A Welcome Return To Simpler Times With Simpler Stories

Ah, the 1960's! What a period in American history were the fun-loving sixties! Life was so much simpler then ... well, that is, except for that whole Vietnam thing that started ... and the Cold War ... and the assassination of JFK ... and probably some other things. Still, it had the Space Race. It had TV's STAR TREK and LOST IN SPACE ... but, before those popular programs were given their chance to shape a generation, the Robinson family was already `lost in space' in the oft-overlooked SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON, given premium treatment here with the collection of VOLUME 4 of their forgotten tales.

(NOTE: the following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of characters and plot. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

If you're familiar with the TV program, then you already know the story - a family, the Robinsons, meant to be the first in space ends up way off-course in the spaceship, trapped thousands of light years from home (i.e. Earth). They braved the final frontier as a family, all four of them trained to live and work amongst the stars, always searching for the path home that eluded them.

What you probably don't know is that the stories of the Robinsons actually began much earlier than the TV show. There's a fair amount of controversy about who founded what exactly (much of this is detailed in this volume's introduction by Brady Connell, son of the late Del Connell who ran Western Publishing Company's comic book efforts at the time of the title's launch), but, in the end, what mattered more was the stories of family and friendships made between these people of Earth and the various aliens they encountered out in the stars.

What still works today is the unbridled sense of enthusiasm prevalent in all of these tales. Despite being stranded and practically forever lost from their home planet, these Robinsons - Craig, June, Tim, Tam, and their pets - maintained an almost militant optimism about their quest to return. In the journeys, they'd help whoever they encountered, often times putting themselves in the face of jeopardy. No matter the odds, they'd prevail ... because that's what families did at times like these. Just like America was kinda/sorta falling apart socially all around itself, one could make the argument that these unexplored worlds and their indigenous dangers paralleled the great social struggle of that era. No matter the risk, the Robinsons faced them. No matter the danger, the Robinsons rushed into the unknown to defend life - theirs and others. Some may find all of this more than a bit passé, but I found it delightful.

And, seriously, science fiction fans couldn't ask for more from SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON. It had space ships. It had space stations. It had ray guns. It had escape shuttles. It had science. It had dinosaurs. It had aliens. It had bird people, plant people, and bug people. It had robots, unexplored planets, time travel, pocket universes, and much, much more. Scribes Dubois and Fallberg went to great lengths to incorporate a contemporary understanding of science, passing along little lessons to their readers, not forcing it down their throats but showing that only those with an understanding of the world around them would survive when mankind broke the barriers of our world.

Not only was it smart and inspiring, but it was everything artistically you'd want to look at. Dan Spiegle's artwork was perfect for the time, choosing to depict the family with basic lines - nothing all that fancy - but sketching and coloring the many environments of these worlds with bright colors, clean interiors, and a snappy sci-fi look. He probably couldn't invest the kind of time and effort spent on `world creation' that happens in today's market, but, for a man who helped bring a different world to life once every thirty days, I thought he did a bang-up job. When it could, he clearly kept it simply; when he knew that the sky was the limit, he delivered something bigger than life ... or, at least, big enough for the lives being lived by the Robinsons.

It's a grand collection. It earns my highest marks.

SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON, VOLUME 4 is published by Dark Horse Comics. Its stories - a collection of single and double-issue reprints - are written by Gaylord Dubois and Carl Fallberg; the art is provided by Dan Spiegle; and the wonderful (wonderful!) cover paintings are done by George Wilson. The hardcover volume bears a cover price of $49.99 ... and, sure, that's a bit steep, but for sci-fi purists like myself, it's definitely worth it if you have the money to spend.

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE. The continuing adventures of the Space Family Robinson are nothing short of a pure delight. Of course, coming as they do from the sixties, these yarns are decidedly dated. Everything happens quickly (especially by today's standards) and, to no one's surprise, everything works out the way you'd want (or maybe even predicted) it to. Volume 4 is a slice of pop culture perfection complete with two loving parents, two high-spirited children, their sidekicks (a dog and a parrot), a traveling space station, crazy creatures, friendly aliens, ray guns, and space wars.

In the interests of fairness, I'm pleased to disclose that the fine folks at Dark Horse Comics provided me with a digital copy of SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON, VOLUME 4 for the expressed purposes of completing this review.

Old School Cool

Love this stuff. No grim and gritty. No gratuitous sex and violence (no sex, period, actually). Fun and varied stories with spare and beautiful Dan Spiegle artwork. Along with Magnus, Robot Fighter and others, the Gold Key line carved out a distinctive niche on the spinner racks. Not for fans of the overwrought and overworked but "fun for all ages".

Like Christmas in early Spring . . .

Years ago (decades really) I use to read and collect all the SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON comics till one day my whole collection got tossed out by "accident" and which I vowed to replace someday. So discovering the whole collection on-line and available in annuals really made my day and my dream of re-collecting my lost SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON comics come true! The colours are just as vivid as I recall and the texture of the pages feels the same if not better. Plus I love the smell of brand new comic books! Thanks to amazon and the printers of this new re-edition!
