An important book. Please read it now.

If only this book could accompany me into a time machine into the past, a journey long enough for me to read the book over and over and over, so the message could take effect and really sink in. This book would have changed my life - and the lives of my family - infinitely for the better.
"When you first meet someone that you are attracted to, you can spend more energy trying to make sure that they like you than thinking about whether or not you like them." Lisa writes. "You tell your best stories and try hard to be interesting. You can spend a lot of time and energy wondering what the other person thinks about you."
Oh, yes.
My first long distance relationship occurred during the Triassic period, when the dating site creators wandered the earth in diapers. The daughter of missionaries, I was living in Indonesia then. I chose my words with lapidary care, sprinkled them onto fragile blue stationery, and tossed them like hopeful paper airplanes across the Pacific to someone I had met in college and dated (platonically) just six times before. His own paper airplanes were written on endless rolls of brown paper wrapped about in string, the words pecked out on an ancient black typewriter in an Alaskan campground encircled by magpies and moose. He eventually proposed over the phone. I was felled by a migraine the day before the wedding, the day I married someone I had not seen in months and hardly knew. During our honeymoon he lost his wedding ring. On the second night he drove our rental car onto soft beach sand as the tide came in, aiming the headlights towards twinkling lights that beckoned from a town across the bay. The eager waves swept in to drown the car along with our luggage locked helplessly in the trunk. That same weekend I learned he was overwhelmingly in debt. I held on for two decades through foreclosure, bankruptcy, IRS debts, and much more. He married me because he was enthralled by my background, while the security I sought in him was a mirage.
Eventually another long distance relationship twinkled in the distance and I sailed out to meet it. The emails came from a man whose knowledge of Asia far exceeded mine who spun tales of elephant attacks, pouncing lions and lunging wolves. He had escaped death in Antarctica and Indonesian mangrove swamps; a mountain was named after him. Well, it was a small mountain, but a mountain still. We lived in different states. I was a moth dazzling into a porch light.
Lisa writes: "I'd learned not to let my imagination run away with me. I'd learned to ask good questions and listen carefully to answers. I'd learned to figure out what I thought of these men, rather than just trying to make sure they were attracted to me. "
At the beginning of my first relationship I should have asked questions about finances and responsibility. I might have learned that he was hopeless with finances, was a bit of a bully, and that he preferred independent, tough women. At the beginning of the second relationship, I should have asked blunt questions about the other relationships in his life. The mad adventurer had serious relationships with two women while he was writing to and meeting with me. I didn't know about the young Indonesian nurse until she read his emails and sent me a very nasty email from his iPhone. My relationship with him was as inconsequential as those lights that had twinkled to our car from across the ocean.
Please read this book and take it to heart. It is important. Ask the questions, one by one, and listen to the answers. And if you find a time machine, please let me know so I can get in. And I will bring this book with me.

A Mix of Light & Serious Questions..

My boyfriend and I just finished this book. We would read some questions each time we talk on the phone. The questions range from light hearted and will give you something to laugh about; to serious questions that really make you think. There are even a few questions that may have you saying, Oh my! Can I really say that? All questions help you get to know each other better. It was interesting to find things in the book that we have already shared or had begun to do. We noticed that a couple of questions duplicate from other relationship books. Also some questions are a series of questions grouped in one. Over all I would say it's a very good book for what it aims to be. I would highly recommend this book to other couples in long distance relationships.

Food for thought... and fodder for conversation

I'm not in a long distance relationship, but was looking for some new ideas and things to talk about with my husband. Having known each other for so long really depletes the number of "when I was younger" stories. And having only one child results in more conversations about princesses than is good for anyone's sanity. I really enjoyed a lot of the discussion questions in this book - some we'd already covered but some helped us talk about new things even after a decade of marriage. And "new things" is great while we're under the same roof let alone when we're separated because of travel. I mean, really... which would YOU choose to have with you on a desert island for a year - high speed internet access or a person?! And IF a person... WHO??

HS book review

I read this book in three days. I've had HS for 14 yrs. It is absolutely wonderful, inspiring and I will use this as my bible to getting my HS under control and hopefully succeed in overcoming it. I have never read any blog, internet site or book that has motivated me or truly given me the underlying factors of HS as much as this. I kept saying to myself “yep that’s me”, “I am on the right track”, “it must be something I’m eating” or “wow that makes sense”. This book is a key to recovery. When I finished reading it I sat and reflected on my diet over the years and until recently I didn’t give it any mind that it could be a particular food group. Up until I read your book I never kept a food diary but I will be to help me find the food group that is triggering my HS.

Sudoku for Everyone

Title should be "Sudoku for Everyone - Except Kindle Readers"! I was attracted by the price for the Kindle version and did not give much thought to how it would appear on Kindle, i.e. not in color. Apparently the examples in the paperback version are in color, which unfortunately my Kindle displays in various shades of grey. Also the examples are not on the same page as the narrative so I'm constantly flipping pages back and forth; don't know if it is similarly presented in the paperback. A wiser choice for me would have been the paperback version. The concepts are presented in a straightforward, logical manner.

An excellent Sudoku strategy book, but not at all conducive to the Kindle format. Diagrams and text, more than not, appear on separate pages. Constant flipping back and forth makes it difficult and confusing at times to grasp a principle... Hence the 3 star rating. I looked but cannot find a print copy of the book. If someone knows where I can get my hands on a copy please let me know. Thanks.....

This is a great book for anyone who wants to improve their Sudoku performance, especially people who don't naturally think strategically. About the Author

David McGriffy has been a programmer since the earliest days of the personal computer. He has piloted both radio-controlled and human-carrying aircraft, including gliders of both sorts. He worked on GPS systems before they had even finished launching all the satellites. He's written embedded systems code for top computer companies and for fun. He has traveled the world to do failure-mode analyses on the control systems of offshore oil rigs and is an inventor on a patent for a vibration analysis system. He is an expert on website performance and has been published by IEEE on the subject. David runs an audio software company, VVAudio, which produces plugins for surround sound and virtual reality. He has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin.

About the Author
Michael E. McCormick is currently a Corbin A. McNeill Professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the US Naval Academy. He is a Fellow of the Marine Technology Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1976, he became the co-editor of the journal Ocean Engineering and remained so for thirty years. Prior to that, he was the editor of the Marine Technology Society Journal. Professor McCormick was the first recipient of the US Naval Academy Alumni Award for Research Excellence and was also awarded the US Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the US Navy Superior Civilian Service Award. He is the author of Ocean Engineering Wave Mechanics and Ocean Wave Energy Conversion. Professor McCormick received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in civil engineering and a Sc.D. in engineering science from Trinity College, Dublin.

Reasonable, but old

This is a reasonable read with a lot of good information. There are many equations available to help the engineer understand the physics of what is happening. Non-engineers may want to find a different book, or skip over any sections with equations. Unfortunately, there are numerous errors in the equations. One great thing is that there are a lot or "worked examples" in this book so it is possible to test your understanding of the equations (and prove that the book has errors).

Perhaps the bigger problem with the book is that it is so old (1981). Wave power has progress a lot since then. The book is well written and carefully considered. It is unfortunate that no one has had a chance to update the book. On the other hand, the physics of wave power does not change, so that section of the book is fine.

If the author writes a Wave Power 2010, I would definitely pick that up.

Excellent technical reference with basic technology review.

I borrowed this from the local varsity library and appreciated it's excellent readable style, dual unit use and relevant examples so much as to make this a must buy and I have done just that. Sensible comparison of various wave energy conversion technologies show how to assess WEC methods. As a prelude to McCormick's later, more advanced books, this is certainly one that should involve the reader in this fascinating technology.

I bought this book for a class (required text), but I think I only opened the book a few times. It seemed a little dated. I traded it back to amazon after the class was over. I just wasn't very impressed and I didn't find it useful. My class was Ocean Energy Conversion and wave energy conversion was about half the class.

About the Author
Danny Shaw teaches Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender at the City University of New York. He holds a Masters in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is fluent in Spanish, Haitian Kreyol, Portuguese, Cape Verdean Kreolu and has a fair command of French. He has worked and organized in over forty different countries, opening his spirit to countless testimonies about the inhumanity of the international economic system. A Golden Gloves boxer, he fought twice in Madison Square Garden for the NYC heavyweight championship. He teaches boxing, yoga and nutrition. Shaw works in the national leadership of the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation and is the managing editor of LiberationSchool.org. He is a mentor to young organizers and the father of two Life Warriors—Ernesto Rafael and Caua Amaru. WTF???

The book had the POTENTIAL to be a cool story as it started out interesting, but this author ruined it. He tried to intertwine too many chracters, scenarios & lifetsyles in a manner that did not mesh well. Their are simply too many main characters, he took alot of scenarios way too far & they were grotesque/far fetched, the ending was STUPID (the best word I could use) & there were too many plots. The more I read the more the book it lost it's appeal. The title has absolutelty NOTHING to do with the book (doesn't even serve as a metaphor) & the girl Pumpkin is far from the focal point of the story. Seems like this author put all his ideas in one book. Don't wast your time or money on this one. Glad I checked it out the library.

The setting for Dejon's sophomore novel, MY SKIN IS MY SIN, is an area of Atlanta known as "Little Vietnam." Here we find Pumpkin who is living with her aunt after her mother was incarcerated on drug charges. Constantly harassed by her aunt's girlfriend, Pumpkin realizes it's time to leave after almost being molested. She moves in with her friend who introduces her to her sister, Goldmine. Under Goldmine's tutelage, Pumpkin enters the world of exotic dancing and discovers the dark side of the streets.

In the backdrop, there is a drug war brewing in Little Vietnam with some drug dealers from New York who are trying to take over the territory of the local dealers. Pumpkin and Goldmine both play a part is fueling the flames. There is also an interesting subplot which involves White Boy Danny who is the coolest white guy in the hood. Readers will be shocked this "down brotha" has a hidden agenda.

MY SKIN IS MY SIN is a plot-driven ride on the wild side. It is a graphic and gritty look at the world of fast money and dangerous living. There is no glamour or success within the pages, just a hard look at the truth. The book is very well written and the author encased elements relating to loyalty, racism and the fight to survive the mean streets. This is my first book from this author and he has captured my full attention. I look forward to future offering by Dejon.

This was a good book as well, Pumpkin went through a lot and it ended so crazy and tragic. I felt like I was right there! Definitely would read again and again!
