Thompson's 'Savage Night' begins as a typical syndicate novel; the story of Carl Bigelow, a diminutive contract killer who's hired to murder a once well placed figure in the syndicate, who has now turned informant. Bigelow is hired by 'The Man' to silence the informent. But he mustn't make it look like a contract killing otherwise it will prompt the politicans to organise a clean up of crime in the city, and that wouldn't be good for The Man's business. So the order is clear: make it look like an accident. There is an interesting series of twists and sub-plots. In true noir-ish traditions there are two women in bigelow's life, but which one has been hired to take care of him? An interesting novel with a rather disturbing ending. It was so disturbing that it haunted me for many weeks after I'd finished reading it. Again, further proof that Thompson was the true master of the maverick crime novel. A worthy book indeed.

With all the myriad demands and challenges that life throws at me, I would prefer to choose my path rather than let life dictate it to me. This is a good read. The book has good ideas and is inspiring. I like motivational reads as it is hard to find any motivation in this world now a days from anyone. This author is thorough with his thoughts and ideas which can easily motivate and encourage one who needs a push in life. This book transformed the lives of presidents and ceos it states; I can definitely see how it did. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone as it has inspired, encouraged, and motivated me to become a more highly effective individual.

A must read for everyone!

This book is probably the tantamount self-help book, and the quality and breadth of the content is why. Every human being should read it. In fact, I wish I had read it when it first came out 25 years ago! I learned a great deal from the book and will re-read it for certain since all of the information is so content rich. The only part that I didn't like was the very end when he brought up "Christ" and kept talking about how essential that is in a person's life. If that's the case, then I guess the 7 Habits are not for Jewish people? He did mention other religions, but in a tertiary sense, though that leaves out non-believers. I just can't accept that the only way to lead a highly effective life is with religion. Other than that, the book is excellent, and as I mentioned, it deserves a second read to absorb is all (except the very last part).

This collection of 26 essays is derived from Garland's "Casebook on Modern Dramatists" series in response to reader's requests for a single volume on recent dramatists. The essays reprinted here do not exceed 20 pages in length and run the (alphabetical) gamut from John Arden to Lanford Wilson. The quality of each essay is high; the opinions and observations are insightful, and the writing is accessible to the persistent undergraduate or theater practitioner. Two particular favorites: Tish Dace's "Who Wrote John Arden's Plays?" is an impassioned appeal for the recognition of Margaretta D'Arcy's collaboration with Arden on all of his work, while Laura Hanson's "Broadway Babies" documents the evolving female character in Stephen Sondheim's work, of particular interest to actors and directors. But who is the audience for this anthology? Judging by holdings information, the individual volumes of the series have penetrated the library market rather successfully. The present work, in its paperback format, would be of most value to students, actors, directors, and dramaturgs and as supplementary reading for dramatic literature courses. About the Author
Manuel Molles received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He currently teaches at the University of New Mexico and is also Curator of Fishes and Aquatic Invertebrates. Dr. Molles has written and co-authored a number of publications on various ecology topics throughout his career, many of which he has presented at national and international conferences. Additionally, Dr. Molles was a Fulbright Scholar in Portugal.

A Very Good Substitute Text

I ordered this tome for my son who is a junior in college. This international version is a fraction of the cost of the US text and is almost identical. However, you should check with your course instructor in advance of purchase and if you get the OK as we did, go ahead and order this text. With the ever-rising cost of education, saving yourself a little money is a not a bad thing at all.
