About the Author
Stan Lee began his career with wartime Timely Comics, and staying the course throughout the Atlas era, Stan the Man made comic book history with Fantastic Four #1, harbinger of a bold new perspective in story writing that endures to this day. With some of the industry’s greatest artists, he introduced hero after hero in Incredible Hulk, Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men, and more, forming a shared universe for rival publishers to measure themselves against. A book that lives up to its name

So I just read all of Stan Lee’s autobiography in one sitting. As you can guess, I thought that it was “Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible: A Marvelous Memoir” which also just so happens to be its title. It introduced me to several aspects of Stan Lee’s life of which I was not aware, from the sad (his second daughter passed away while she was still a baby) to the humorous (he almost went to jail for “stealing” his own mail from the post office) to the downright weird (he once wrote a comic series about a stripper). What makes this autobiography (or, perhaps, semiautobiography) unique and completely fitting for the man whose story it tells is that it is in comic book form (hence the semiautobiography, as he had another writer assist him and an illustrator to do the art). Also fitting is that the art isn’t mere illustration, it actually helps to tell the story of his life and is inseparable from the writing (as any good comic book should be). I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan superheroes, pop culture, comics, biographies, or simply reading in general, as it is the story of a man who loves to read (and write!) and how that love has shaped his life. Excelsior!

A colorful, fun and touching memoir

Are you a fan of superheroes? Have you ever been thrilled by the action in a comic book? Did you ever imagine yourself a hero with special powers and super strength? Have you ever heard of Spider-Man or The Incredible Hulk? If you answered “yes” to even one of these questions, then your life has been influenced by the work of comic book legend Stan Lee.
Entering the world of comics in 1939, Lee (born Lieber in New York City in 1922) took on more creative responsibilities over the years, especially after teaming up with Jack Kirby. So much of American pop culture has been touched by Lee's pen, and his influence extends well beyond the pages of the comics for which he is known. From book and film adaptations to Halloween costumes and more, the superheroes and supergroups Lee created or co-created, not to mention his signature storytelling style, are now an intrinsic part of the American cultural landscape. In AMAZING FANTASTIC INCREDIBLE, Lee tells the story of his career and life in a comic book memoir. Written with Peter David and with lead artist Colleen Doran, this “marvelous memoir” is full of energy, vibrant color and all the excitement you'd expect from a Stan Lee comic creation.
Lee's early years in New York were marked by his family's poverty, the confidence instilled by his mother's love and attention and especially his love of reading. He was particularly drawn to adventure tales. A smart kid and a hard worker, Lee skipped grades but was often bored and limited by his family’s financial restraints. The gift of a bicycle on his 12th birthday opened up a world of physical imagination as he pretended to be the dashing hero of his favorite movies.
After a series of odd jobs, Lee was hired by the publishing company where his uncle worked. There he met Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, creators of Captain America, who soon let him write his own story, “Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge,” under his new pen name. When Simon and Kirby left that publishing house, it fell to Lee to take over the comic division. A stint in the army during World War II took him away from comics (though he met many interesting writers and artists), but he returned to work in 1947, the year he met his wife, Joan.
Happily married and enjoying his career, things were not always easy. In 1954, a Senate subcommittee on juvenile delinquency pointed the finger at comic books as a cause. For many years to come, comic books were subject to near censorship by the Comics Code Authority. And while Lee and Joan became parents to their daughter, Joan Celia, their second daughter, Jan, died in infancy. Still, Lee's work carried on, and his characters and stories quickly became classics. Turning to Norse mythology, he reimagined Thor, a character and storyline on which he collaborated with his younger brother, Larry Lieber. From Iron Man to the X-Men, Lee's heroes and villains have enthralled, enchanted and entertained readers for decades.
AMAZING FANTASTIC INCREDIBLE provides insight into not only comic book rivalries such as DC vs. Marvel, but also Lee's varied roles as a writer, publisher, editor and entertainment magnate, not to mention devoted family man. Especially interesting is the inside scoop on the inspiration for and development of so many beloved characters. This is a colorful, fun and often touching memoir in the format best suited for recounting Lee's life.

Truly a "Marvelous Memoir"

Amazing Fantastic Incredible IS actually an amazing, fantastic, incredible book. It’s not just a look at his work at Marvel, but a portrait of key moments of his private life, co-written by Peter David and illustrated by Colleen Doran.
Since it’s Marvel’s 75th Anniversary this year —- and Stan has been there since almost the very beginning —- Stan can (and does) weigh in on about just every major thing that’s happened there, both good and bad. More than that, Stan’s life is told in great detail, including some family secrets and probably a thing or two that was painful to relate. Like the superhero comics he’s scripted for decades, his life is frequently shattered by unexpected deaths in both of his “families”: the one at home and the one at work.
Stan is assisted by two excellent storytellers in relating his history. Peter David writes everything (not just comics) and, like Stan, has worked at Marvel both on-staff and as a freelancer. Artist Colleen Doran is best known for her epic adventure stories, and this book is not all that much different than those (although this book has a lot fewer sharp, pointy objects and cool hair than her stories do).
The artwork is much fun to read throughout, as there are an incredible number of very clever artistic “swipes” of classic Marvel Comics scenes. They’re adapted to fit into Stan’s narrative as though they belong there, like when Stan meets his future wife Joan for the first time, in a framing reminiscent of the introduction of Mary Jane Watson to Peter Parker. Also, when Stan is talking specifically about things that he worked on, we get to see replicas of the covers and pin-ups and artifacts in their real-life forms. (Of course, Stan can’t resist covering them with copious caption boxes! It’s part of his charm!)
All the stories you want to hear are here. Like when Stan met Jack Kirby (and Joe Simon) for the first time. I’d somehow forgotten how young Stan was when that happened. And there’s sad stuff beyond unexpected deaths, as when Stan became disillusioned with the bosses and the company that Marvel became. There are blow-by-blow accounts of how the classic Marvel characters were created, although I’ll bet that many readers have those stories memorized by now. I was absolutely charmed by the presentation of the material; it seemed all new (or at least different, because it was more personal) to me.
Just as its subhead describes, Amazing Fantastic Incredible IS “A Marvelous Memoir”. Stan always was great about giving his readers exactly what they wanted! (The publisher provided a review copy. Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)
