A very strong textbook for Asian surveys

I found this book in 1997 after desperately searching for something to replace Shirokauer's creaky _Modern China and Japan_. I have used it for several Modern East Asia courses and am presently using it for a Traditional East Asia survey, and I find that students of all levels of knowledge appreciate it. It does have a few shortcomings, as I feel would be the case for any textbook on Asia, as the topic is so expansive and many situations are downright confusing. However, it gives a good balance of political to social history, has extremely useful maps and insets, and the writing is consistently good. I would also recommend it for the casual reader who wants to get a decent background on Asian culture.

This book needs improvement in some areas

There are a few weaknesses and factual errors in this book.
1. Index is very weak. Many important concepts are not listed in the index.
2. Too much emphasis on ancient/imperial China but not enough coverage of modern and contemporary East Asia.
3. Organization is puzzling. For instance, such an important historical period as the Northern Expedition is put under the chapter "China and Japan: the Road to War." This is an important period that deserves to have its own chapter.
4. Opinions(?)as facts. On page 349, the following description is given: "Zhang Xueliang and his troops kidnapped Chiang Kai-shek where he was spending a few days at a hot spring resort (with a lady not his wife!) and demanded...." The author has provided no documentation for Chiang's alleged liaison with another woman. Moreover, no other reference to this affair seems to be available in all relevant literature about the Xian Incident and Chiang Kai-shek . Chiang is a controversial figure but this allegation just cannot be supported.
Also stated in the book is the following statement: "The [Chinese] communists were tying down about a million Japanese troops..." during WWII. Considering the total number of Japanese troops in China during that period, this is tantamount to suggesting that the communist guerrillas pretty much single-handedly handled all the Japanese troops whereas the Nationalist troops did nothing. This is factually wrong and cannot be supported by historical facts.
These are just a few examples of the problems associated with this book. Here is hope that future editions will correct some of the aforementioned problems. The author did make an effort to weave all countries and historical periods together, which was challenging. He succeeded in some areas, but failed in some other.

An excellent primer on Asia by a humanist scholar and writer

Rhoads Murphey's East Asia: A New History covers everything a lay person needs and wants to know about this complex region and culture. This book is a fascinating and easy-to-read summary of Dr. Murphey's 60-year-long living and teaching experience in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and other Asian countries. It is an excellent introduction to Asia not just as a textbook but a very useful primer for corporate executives, professionals and even tourists. I've read this book and its various editions ever since 1973 when I first studied with Professor Murphey as a graduate student. Readers will get from this book not just the facts, images, philosophy and poetry of East Asia. You will see the humanity of a great teacher, scholar, writer and romantic who knows how to make Americans understand and appreciate our fellow men and women of this important part of the world. The book never fails to make me smile and re-discover the many simple truths about cultures that we so easily forget.

About the Author
H. Ward Silver has experienced a 20-year career as an electrical engineer developing instrumentation and medical electronics. He also spent 8 years in broadcasting, both programming and engineering. In 2000, he turned to teaching and writing as a second career, producing Ham Radios For Dummies in 2004. He supports Seattle University’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in laboratory instruction. He is an avid Amateur Radio operator, Extra Class, first licensed in 1972. Each month, his columns and articles can be found in the national ham radio magazine, QST, published by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). He is the author of the ARRL’s online courses in Antenna Design and Construction, Analog Electronics, and Digital Electronics. When not in front of a computer screen, you will find him working on his mandolin technique and compositions.

For Dummies for me

The 4th or 5th book in the series of "for dummies" that I have purchased [not sure what that says about me]. If you have read a few of these books they follow the same basic theme - you're a dummy and don't know anything so lets start at the very beginning. Just what I was looking for! Now working on my HAM license but I had to start somewhere. Timely shipping, sufficient packing to arrive undamaged, and a reasonable price.

Outstanding overview for the novice or those even curious about radio

This book gives a very thorough overview of the world of radio. It discusses in detail the various radio systems in use and how to determine what radio fits your needs. There is a great deal of information on selecting radios for business use, as well as the expected discussion of Ham radio and the use of radios by government agencies and emergency services. The book can be a bit technical in some sections, but from cover to cover it provides a great overview for some interested in understanding a broad range of topics related to radios.

This may put me on both sides of the wrong age too old to today's generation and too young to the skaters of the 80s but as a seven-year-old runt in 1987, I would travel down to Milwaukee's Turf Skatepark with my mom and my older brother, Than, and split time watching him do scratcher grinds in the ice-slick deep bowl or slamming around a joystick while attempting to out-run bees in the video game 720º;. All I did was kneeboard then, but I liked the smell of the Turf lobby and would spend a good deal of time admiring the fluorescent wheels, board graphics - namely, the Tony Hawk Powell-Peralta Bird Skull graphic - or the griptape art (Even the pre-cut Nash circular saw grip design seemed awesome to me at the time).

When I finally started skateboarding in 1995, the first mid nineties memory that comes to mind is the girl who modeled for Teabag clothing. She was gorgeous in a way reserved only for a boy on the verge of pubescence and she graced the pages of Big Brother magazine, where Sean Cliver worked.

I didn't take much notice at the time, but when Sean Cliver wrote Disposable: A History of Skateboard Art in 2005, it brought a lot of my memories back, not just from the perfect storm that was Big Brother, but of those years at the Turf all those memories that each wheel, board graphic or piece of torn griptape held. Now, I am not and probably never will be a skateboard collector, but his most recent follow-up book, The Disposable Skateboard Bible broadens the years of nostalgia and is an amazing read for anyone who holds their greatest memories in the very thing they have spent their life destroying. Missing memories

I bought this book after picking up a copy of Concrete Wave magazine. There was an interview for the author and a few photos from the book which I found very interesting.

When I started skateboarding it was in 1986, and at the height of popularity in my area. Every shop was covered with neon deck designs and day glo plastic parts for sale. I don't remember many (if any) wheels that were natural colored white, everything was bright and loud. Every company stood out, there was no mistake for a Vision board or a G&S, you could even tell the difference from the shapes alone.

I never actually had a board from these years, my parents bought me a generic board while my friends all had the skate shop specials. So all I could do is read the Transworld and Thrasher magazines at the super market.

Years later, I wanted to buy a reissue board and while searching around I knew there was a few favorites that were missing. The reissue market is mostly Santa Cruz and Powell, with some other brands like a few Vision. After finding this book from reading Concrete Wave, I was amazed at the amount of skateboards I remember and the ones that I didn't.

The book is produced on a nice thick cover and each page is very thick, also there is a bit of distressed look to the pages. Each deck is photographed very clearly, and the range of graphics is amazing, I had no ideas there were so many colors to some of the decks or alternate graphics.

I think the part that really surprised me was how I could remember so many of the boards and who had them. It also kinda of made me realize that how technical skating has gotten really left behind the unique shapes that defined some of the boards. I just recently bought my first longboard and find it's more fun as their shapes and design are fun since it's different from each other.

In closing, if you have any interest in skating history or just interested in the graphics, or even wanting to create your own custom skateboard, this is a great resource. The book covers from the beginning of skateboarding, to about 2007.

I don't usually write reviews but this is one of the raddest books I've ever purchased.

This book is written by Sean Cliver who designed skateboard graphics for Powell originally back in 1988 (He designed all the rad Powell graphics in the early 90's. Ray Barbee, Frankie Hill, Bucky Lasek), then went on to work at World Industries, Birdhouse and Hookups. He still designs board graphics in a freelance capacity. The dude knows really knows how to design and fully understands the over all radness of skateboard graphics, which is evident by this book.

Now for the book. It's the best coffee table book you can buy if you skate, used to skate, or like rad skateboard graphics and skateboard history. 368 pages of decks and insight from the 70's through the 90s. It's basically like the history of the skateboard.

The quality of the book is top shelf style. Hard bound with a ribbon for saving pages. Printing is really high quality. You can tell that he spent a lot of time on every single page of this book to make sure it was perfect. Each page is fully designed from top to bottom. You won't see a white page with just pictures and words, because he's designed the background of the pages as well with a patina you might see in a really old book.

I'm in the graphic t shirt design industry and this book contains pretty much everything that has inspired me to get to where I am today. It's really refreshing to see a book as well written and designed as this, by someone that I can really relate to.

Bottom line. Get this book. I would have paid twice the price for it.

Amusing book for baby!

I first heard of this book when a mom was reading to her child out loud. My husband and I thought, what a weird book about coconut trees and alphabets. We thought she made it up.

Enter baby and when we shopped for books this was a bestseller. We bought it and couldn't believe that was the story the mom recited! To my surprise, it was the only book that held my newborns attention. To this day -- now 6 months -- she is still captivated by the book images and rhythm. Favorite book for baby!

My 3 month old loves it!

My 3 month old is captivated! I'm not sure if she's making the connection to the letters, words, or the fact that I'm reading it, but she scans every page! The board book is sturdy and easy to handle, so I let my girl hold it and play with the pages as well.

Wonderful Story

This is one of the greatest children's books of all time. My children love this cute little rhyming tale about all of the letters in the alphabet. We have owned both the board book and the paperback version, and in my experience, by the time that children are able to really enjoy this book, they are able to handle paper page books. My favorite part of this book in the alphabet pages at the beginning and end. This is always a perfect time for me to review the alphabet with my children WHILE pointing to each letter as we sing it. This helps eliminate the confusion of "LMNOP" being one letter! haha

Now, Pay Attention, 007...

Though the system is old, it is, at its core, simpler than many game systems produced in its era. While many games were designed with the intention of modeling physics, and oft-times slipped into the error of thinking that more complexity equaled more sophistication, James Bond 007 was fairly innovative in its attempts to model the genre it promises to assist players in emulating. Once one grasps how the core mechanic works - Primary Chance multiplied by Ease Factor, roll percentile dice and consult the Success Chance chart for Quality Rating achieved - the rest of the game flows quite smoothly.

Especially interesting are the use of Hero Points, which can be used for various purposes such as improving your skill roll results, decreasing the rolls of NPC opponents, and making advantageous things happen (such as finding a flare gun in the glove compartment of the East German military fuel tanker truck you just hijacked in which to make your escape, to cite one actual-play example). Echoes of this would later be seen in games such as Savage Worlds and Fate. While you can just keep track of Hero Points on the character sheet, I purchased a set of 50 Brybelly Monte Carlo Premium Poker Chips in $10,000 denominations for use in my game. In addition to adding atmosphere to our session, the colors even match the orange and black of the gamebook's cover.

Bear in mind that GMs have a way to counter Hero Points if they so choose: major NPCs have Survival Points, which have a similar function. So while Bond will take down mooks with relative ease, he's going to have to work harder to bring down Dr. No or Auric Goldfinger.

Should you fear that the player characters are going to walk all over the GM's NPCs, be aware that characters are built with points rather than randomly rolled, and that there are three levels of character competency: Rookie, Agent, and 00 Agent. 00 Agents are built on far more points than the other two tiers, and begin the game with many more Hero Points. Again, this results in a feel appropriate to a James Bond game, where 00 Agents will get through many harrowing circumstances relatively unscathed. Meanwhile, if you want a game where the PCs will have to work harder to achieve their missions, consider running a game with Agent characters. As of this writing, I haven't yet tried to run a game where all of the player characters were Rookies, but I'd like to give it a try. It seems that it would result in a more low-key and challenging game where each character needed to specialize in one field and use teamwork to complete their objectives.

James Bond 007 is uncommon among RPGs in that it is designed to accommodate a single player and GM. Though they are sometimes assisted by Rookies and Agents, 00 Agents most often work alone. This means that you can play a single-player game without the GM needing to run a number of NPCs to supplement the "party," as one must in many other games. 00 Agents are highly-competent and have a broad range of skills and areas of expertise, after all, and the mechanics support that idea. The only drawback to this is if you have a group of players and one of them wants to play a 00 Agent, the other players need to be prepared to play a support or even comic-relief role (unless you want a game filled with 00 Agent-level characters). This flies in the face of most RPGs, where it is expected that all player characters will be roughly equal in terms of ability (though games such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer have handled this imbalance well).

Also enjoyable is the way in which chases are run. Each participant chooses one of five maneuvers to perform (though there are only five, any action you can think of is possible within them) and then begins to bid against the GM (representing the NPCs). Each bid makes your planned maneuver that much riskier to perform, but the one who bids the lowest determines who gets initiative. Those who fail their rolls or push their vehicles too hard have a chance of suffering a Mishap, which can damage their vehicle and/or their character, and take them out of the chase. Actual play resulted in the same sort of spectacular stunts and crashes for which the Bond films are justly famous. Though I've focused on vehicle chases, the same rules are used for pursuit on foot, horseback, and so on.

There are subsystems for playing casino games, seduction, and of course, hand-to-hand and gun combat. These each play out in a way that I felt mirrored how these elements manifest in the movies. The only downside that I found was that in order to play out the casino games, the GM actually needs to have some idea of how the games work. Easy enough for a game of blackjack, but when it comes to something more Bondian, like Chemin-de-fer, I'm a bit in the dark. A copy of Hoyle's would probably have been a good tool to have at hand back in the day, but fortunately, we can always refer to Wikipedia or watch a YouTube video to acquire this knowledge. And it does result in feeling like you're playing out a Bond movie rather than just making a single skill roll a la Pathfinder.

Of course, the book is of its time in ways that can't be helped. If you're setting your games in the 1970s or 80s, the core book will have most everything you need: weapons, vehicles, maps and guides to major cities of the world. If you want to run it closer to modern day, well, you're going to be on your own to figure out statistics, or just figure out a close equivalent in the book to copy. At least with cities, you still have Google Maps and the rest of the internet to consult. That said, I would still recommend getting other books in this series, such as Q Branch and Thrilling Locations, which offer much more. An old grognard like me is perfectly happy to run games set in the Cold War, but I can appreciate the desire to James Bond 007 in the here-and-now.

Where the author pleasantly surprises is in the adaptation from the source materials. The book is written to balance its inspirational sources, drawing from both Ian Fleming's novels and the films. This is reflected in the illustrations, as well, where James Bond has a uniform appearance throughout the book; I credit the illustrator, James Talbot, for drawing specific scenes from the movies and managing to blend the features of Sean Connery, George Lazenby, and Roger Moore. At the same time, Gerard Christopher Klug avoids the worse aspects of the novels and movies (namely, racism and misogyny); NPCs are presented with a bit more humanity than some of their characters were treated in their respective films, and in the example of play, the GM is female. While certainly not unheard of in games of its time, I still found it refreshing on a recent re-read.

On the whole, James Bond 007 is a solid, entertaining action-espionage RPG that does splendidly in recreating the feel of Bond films. There are many great games out there these days to tackle other styles of spy stories (as well as some that handle Bond's type of devil-may-care tradecraft), but you could do a lot worse than this.

007 Role Players Handbook (Basic Game Book)

I first came upon this book in 1987. And almost twenty years later, I'm reading and going through it over and over again. The Basic Game Book is a manual of the workings of a James Bond role playing world and it's core rules. It is a RPG along the same lines of Dungeons and Dragons.

This book is not not only informative and insightful but the artwork is great as well. It is concise and very organized and structured when explaining how to bring the world of 007 to life. Whether you are a 007 fan or not, if you want to role play in the world of international espionage, this is the book for you.

Excellent Spy RPG

A classic and innovative design, this really captures the feel of 007 adventures. You can create your own spy for Her Majesty's Secret Service, or play Bond or another character from the novels or movies.

This game was an early pioneer of some key concepts in tabletop gaming, notably the use of a "fate point" system
to keep player characters alive. It also makes good use of levels of success in action resolution. The basic concepts of its vehicle chase system have been borrowed my many game designers since. It has a decent combat system, but also appropriately spends a lot of time on social and other non-combat interactions suitable for James Bond setting, e.g., gambling. There is excellent advice to support the game master and encourage roleplaying.

A few weaknesses show up. The equipment section is functional but basic (the Q-Manual supplement fixes that). The point generation system for characters, while fine, is a little unwieldy (you end up juggling thousands of character points). Licensing issues meant that photos from the films were unavailable and that SPECTRE could not be used. This is not a huge issue (many of the movies featured non-Spectre villains) and the game substitutes a stand-in agency, Tarot, but it is a minor irritation to some readers.

The technology and references date the book to the 80s, but it would be fairly trivial to update it to the present-day Bonds or another spy genre game.

Michael Batts has more than 25 years of experience serving on nonprofit boards and advising nonprofit organizations on matters related to board governance, financial reporting, tax compliance and strategy, corporate structure, international activities, and related issues. Mike is the president and managing shareholder of Batts Morrison Wales & Lee, PA, an Orlando-based accounting firm dedicated exclusively to serving nonprofit organizations and their affiliates throughout the United States. He is an accomplished author and national speaker on matters related to the nonprofit sector. Mike has actively engaged in nonprofit legislative matters, having drafted and lobbied successfully for a number of state statutes for nonprofit tax exemptions and having served on the Legal Framework Workgroup of the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, a legislative advisory panel formed at the request of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman. He previously served as chairman of the board of ECFA, a national organization that accredits religious nonprofit organizations in the areas of board governance and financial integrity. He currently serves on ECFA’s board and is the chairman of its Standards Committee. Mike was recently appointed chairman of the Commission on Accountability and Policy for Religious Organizations, a national commission convened by ECFA upon the request of Senator Charles Grassley to address accountability and policy issues related to religious and other nonprofit organizations.

Finally--clarity for churches on unrelated business income

Having been involved in the church sector for most of my professional career, I can attest to the need for clearly written information on the topic of unrelated business income for churches. How many times I have heard someone say: "The church will lose its tax-exempt status if they are involved in activity A, B, or C." While there may be federal income tax to pay on unrelated business income, there rarely is a challenge to a church's tax-exempt status. Michael Batts clarifies this and many other related issues in this marvelous book. It is a "must read" for every church leader!
