My Favorite Machen

I've read quite a few of Machen's books and short stories and this one is my favorite. The writing style is beautiful and poetic and there's a sense of sinister mystery pervading the whole thing. It gave me a lovely, spine-tingling feeling. A truly great read!

A great little book of reminders in a world grown too busy to remember simple common curtsies of the older times when people treated one another well. There is something in this little book for EVERYONE...yourself included, lol... I hope you feel the same once you have a look.

Int was written 1oo years ago and terminology that is no longer used will amuse you at how they expresses themselves compared to how we might say the exact same things now. Interesting and beneficial to all..... Young couple just starting off or dating would do well to adopt some of these once common niceties and mannerly approach.

Be a Manly Man or a Womanly Woman and get the book.....then when you have finished it, share it with someone that could use a little polishing of the rougher edges.

Very practical guidance, even in today's world

I received this as a wedding gift and have been enjoying it ever since. While some of the advice is outdated, such as "don't serve your husband cold meat" I've found much of Blanche's advice to be very practical, especially in a new marriage. She encourages equality within the marriage, which I wasn't expecting, while still advocating for each spouse to love, encourage, and support the other one. A fun book to have in the house, for marriages new and old.

Walking a fine line.

I, too, bought this book in the 70s, and was cured by it of the notion that wild animals can ever live happily with people. After ten years as a veterinary technician, I've had to back off that notion, but only a little. There are a very, very few people out there who are willing to understand a wild animal and adapt themselves to its needs. These people--many of them are trainers--can actually enrich the lives of the captive wild animals they work with. I'm not one of them. You'll probably conclude, after reading this book, that you aren't either.

That Pat (and her excellent ghostwriter Peter S. Beagle) can negotiate this boundary is remarkable. Although the book is quite sentimental, it also talks about the dangers of sentiment. And Pat doesn't pull any punches, sharing with us times when, out of ignorance and/or desparation, she did things she isn't proud of. She comes off as being deeply divided, and rightly so, about her right to have anything to do with these creatures, even though she obviously loves them deeply and devotes her life to understanding them. The last I heard, she was involved in sanctuary work, rescuing exotic "pets." Hallelujah!

For a deeper undestanding of the conversations that can happen between humans and animals when true respect and attention are maintained, I also recommend the books of trainer Vicki Hearne.

A must read about the plight of animals used in entertainment

This book is wonderful. You will cry. You will become very angry about the injustices of the animal trade in the entertainment industry. It gives an inside look at what goes on that we on the "outside" of the industry know precious little about. Things are not all rosy, far from it. If you wish to stay in denial, this is not the book for you but if you are ready to hear the truth, it's a must read.

Excellent Although Emotional Read

Book provides an excellent insight into the world of exotic wild animal trading and animal trainers in the Hollywood profession. Your emotions will get the entire spectrum from this book--from tears about animal cruelty to the laughs of the funny predicaments. Most wild animal trading involve babies sadly taken away from mothers and growing up to have emotional and health problems. The author lets it all hang out and even admits when she was regrettably part of the problem. Book provides excellent examples of why the wild and exotic animal business needs to regulated more strictly and reduced greatly. Kudos to Pat Derby for writing this book.

Great Novel

I came across this nice cover as I was browsing and started to read it. It sure is one of those books that you couldn't put down. I really enjoyed reading it. It's not as gory or as scary as I would thought it to be. This book seems to be inspired by Dante's works with referring to circles of Hell and a demon's love for the Child of Light. The ending was quite unexpected and a nice touch.

I thought it was a pretty good story, but what I really enjoyed was the character developments and how real they were. I'm glad that I got a chance to read it.

Definitely a must read

Circles was a book I couldn't put down. I started reading and had to stay up till midnight to finish and find out what happened. By about the 2nd chapter I was hooked. The end of chapter 7, with the coffee, made me laugh out loud. Circles is not nearly as dark as you might imagine it would be due to the subject matter. However, it is a bit scary and probably not totally appropriate for those under 8 or 9. Reading with your younger child is a good idea because there will be questions they have that need answering to avoid a nightmare or two. I don't mean that in a bad way, it really isn't scary in and of itself, more the ideas it can make us think that are scary. Our imaginations are much better at scaring us that any written word. I enjoyed the character development, the fact that it was set in Seattle, and it's different than any book I've read in a long time. I loved the very last page too. It left me wanting more story...in a great way. I wasn't left hanging, just wanting. Buy the book, it's totally worth it!

Until this book I had never been interested in Dante's Inferno, the story comes from such a unexpected direction and pulls you to the very depths of Hell.
She takes our current time and pulls you back and forth creating yet another interpetation of the struggle of good verses evil.
I can't wait for the next book from Jae Holt!

Angus McBride is one of the best Military Illustrators on the scene. His work is always interesting , realistic , convincing & coupled with a very sly sense of humor. If your forte is Military History and want an idea of what a warrior looks like from the past. You could do a whole lot worse than this series. (I myself own over 300 of them and use them a lot in my classroom) The only down side of this series is that the written part is usally not up to the caliber of the illustrations.

Angus McBride both pens and illustrates this excellent example of the famous, high quality Osprey books.

In this Osprey Men at Arms issue the famous illustrator Angus McBride also provided the text, I can't remember a similar situation. As it happens, McBride can write nearly as well as he can draw. The drawings first--McBride not only draws examples for us of many of the regular, semi-regular and irregular units of the British Empire but also examples of several of the various Zulu regiments involved the the great Zulu-Empire war. Each regiment has a distinctive color of shield but also has a unique and elaborate head dress that McBride manages to depict in detail. He is well known and well regarded and his skill here equals his fine reputation.
Most of the text is filled up with a long and skillful description of the British invasion of Zululand in 1878-1879. The various battles he details complete with maps. The battles include the great Zulu at Isandlwana and the heroic defense of Rorke's Drift by outnumbered British soldiers.
All in all this is a good example of the Osprey books, a series well known for reliable excellence.

The Zulu War

This early men-at-arms title is an excellent source on the fighting men of the Zulu Wars, focusing equally on the Zulu themselves and the British and their African allies. The color plates are amongst Angus McBride's earliest, and the book itself is also expertly written by the famous illustrator. Overall, like all men-at-arms titles it is an unrivalled source on the organization, clothing, and weaponry of its subject.

Very structured and as a result easy and enjoyable to read. Contains the most important information on company law. Simply explains complex principles. I think, that "Understanding company law" is a really great book to start exploring U.K. company law.

What happened?

This last book was super depressing! I have never read a book where death and then heaven were the happily ever after. I really liked the first two but this one felt like a super long epilogue after 30% through. There really wasn't any depth to a lot of the secondary characters introduced. I think that is partly because the author wanted to cover such a large time span, that she often had to gloss over things. It was nice to know what happened to each of the characters but you missed out too. Also this book focused much more on religious themes like heaven, peace with god and god's plan. Because not everyone agrees on those themes I thought I would just put that out there.

Fond of the Series

I'm fond of this story--all three books. The series certainly has a hopeful ending about the afterlife. However, it was a little too preachy for me. Also, there's an underlying story in the series that made me uncomfortable, which I can only describe as the "taming of the shrew" part of the series. Too often, as it is in real life, the reader is presented with the truth that "this is just how it is." Ironically, it was far too realistic for me and how the world remains, despite it's futuristic plot and fantasy elements. It brought home the truth that things haven't changed much. It brought home many truths, in fact, and I didn't like some of them, but that's not because they weren't true.
Overall, I loved the way the story read. I particularly liked the story line, which was imaginative and very approachable, easy to get into. I read every word over several days. It was engaging, realistic in ways that I found interesting, and unrealistic in other ways, that I also found interesting, if uncomfortable. No matter what, I stuck with the story and finished the entire series, despite my disbelief in some of the assumptions made in the story.

The Best for last

This is definitely my favorite book in The Circle series. This story is very emotional and has a lot of drama, and conflict. Everything in a story I love. There were several times when Charlie had me fuming. But his emotions and reactions made the story realistic. I don't like reading books were all the characters and perfect. We all have flaws and I like the fact that this story shows Charlie's growth. I also like that we get a better understanding of Charlie's feelings during his distance. Knowing his true feelings let you understand him better, and gives you a better insight of the very tragic situation. Michael and Delilah were Very entertaining to read about. I liked being able to see a Sentrian's relationship. And Eve Royal or as I call her Royal Queen B, is by far one of my favorite villains. I'm thrilled justice was served. The Epilogue chapter, Sonora was beautiful. It ties everything together seamlessly.
