Surprising and Fun Sci-fi Adventure

Mars Greening is a fun and lighthearted novel incorporating all the best aspects of science fiction. The Mars world Benvenuto creates is imaginative, described in wonderful detail, and perhaps most importantly-really makes me want to go there. In the novel, Mars was "accidentally" terraformed, resulting in fields of beans and radishes covering portions of the not-so-red-anymore planet. The main character is Tony, whose job allows him to travel the surface of Mars and describe the landscape and dangers of living out in the open. Additionally, Tony spends some time in the cities, where we get to know his friends and learn more about city life on Mars. Perhaps the most intriguing and fun are the holo-movies, where Tony and friends are able to play characters in the movie scenes in a sort of build your own adventure plot. The interactions between Tony and his colleague Yoshi are particularly lighthearted and funny. Overall, Benvenuto describes tantalizing details about how civilization is built and maintained on Mars, the characters are well-loved and funny, and the story keeps you entertained through the last page. Mars Greening is great read, and I'm looking forward to a sequel!

Hard to like

I wanted to like this book, I really did. The author is very good creating characters that you care about and the characters where strong and believable. The story telling, however, leaves much to be desired. For example, the main character, Tony Rust, discovers some lines in the Martian soil that appear to be too straight to be natural. This event happens at the 10 percent mark of the book. Any Sci Fi fan worth his salt knows that this is what the story is going to be about (or should be). So what does the author do? He has the characters go on a vacation. The book turns into a Mars travelogue and the lines are forgotten and not mentioned again until the 50 percent mark. "Okay" I say, now we're going to get down to business and things will get interesting. But "NO". The story once again veers off into a different plot line that left me totally frustrated. "What about those flippin lines???" Finally, at the 85% mark, they become part of the story and, as you can guess, this story is only a setup for the sequel. Very disappointing for me. This author has talent and I hope that in future books, he will stick to the point and not meander so much.

I enjoyed the book

I enjoyed the book! Good pace, good character development, and a nice job of painting a picture of Mars. I'm looking forward to the sequel (the setup is there).
